Pat Nevin believes Danny Drinkwater would be a good addition to the Chelsea squad.
The Blues have already failed with one offer for the Leicester City midfielder in the summer transfer window.
The Premier League champions have been tipped to return with an improved bid to sign the 27-year-old midfielder.
Drinkwater would be a good addition to the Chelsea squad given Antonio Conte’s side will be competing on four fronts next term.
Chelsea are currently light in the midfield department after the Blues made the controversial decision to sell Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal earlier this month.
Summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko is currently recovering from a knee operation and remains a doubt for Sunday’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
Cesc Fabregas, meanwhile, is suspended for the London derby after the Spain international was sent off during last weekend’s surprise 3-2 loss to Burnley in their Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin appeared to back the west London side’s pursuit of Leicester star Drinkwater given the lack of options available to Conte.
“You keep on hearing names like Drinkwater right now. Chelsea do need back up,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last term after finishing seven points clear of Tottenham.
