Liverpool legend explains how Bakayoko is better than Matic

Liverpool icon Jamie Redknapp has gone on to state his belief that Tiemoue Bakayoko can prove to be a better option for Chelsea than Manchester United star Nemanja Matic.

Chelsea decided to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United this summer for around £40million and while the Blues did receive a large amount from the sale of the Serbian international, many were left baffled as to why they would sell one of their most influential players to a direct title rival.

Since moving to United, Matic has been a crucial part of the side that has started the Premier League campaign in sensational fashion and his performances only serve to amplify Chelsea’s aberration in selling the 29-year-old.

However, Chelsea have brought in Tiemoue Bakayoko as a replacement for Matic and the Frenchman did manage to impress on his debut by playing a key role in helping the Blues claim a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday.

Liverpool legend Jamie Redknapp was certainly left very impressed with the performance of Bakayoko and following the game, he explained how the former Monaco star could prove to be a better player than Matic was for Chelsea.

Redknapp said on Sky Sports, “I thought he did very well considering he’s not had a pre-season. It’s been difficult because there has been so many comparisons with Nemanja Matic and the importance that he had at Chelsea.

“Obviously he’s not there now and I’m sure he was a bit nervous about that. I thought today he was very composed, he was powerful, completely different to Nemanja Matic. Nemanja Matic for example does not have the power to pick the ball up in these areas and run 40-50 yards.

“He (Bakayoko) is a midfield powerhouse, he worked extremely hard today, he had a different role to what he will probably have in some games because Chelsea played with a diamond. I think Chelsea have got a good player here, make no mistake about it, 23 years of age and I think in a few years to come he will only get better.”
