Antonio Conte has stood firm on why his Chelsea side need more players and now he has backing from one of the club’s legends, Frank Lampard.
The former Chelsea midfielder has told his old side what they need to do in the transfer market to stay competetive in the new season.
The Premier League champions were beaten on penalties by Arsenal in the FA Community Shield Sunday after a 1-1 result in the 90 minutes.
Victor Moses had given the Blues the lead early in the second half before Arsenal new signing Sead Kolasinac equalized late in the game. The goal had resulted from a free kick caused by Pedro’s bad tackle on Mohammed El Nenny. He got sent off afterwards.
“You look at the two teams there, and Chelsea have got almost half of what the Arsenal squad is.”
Lampard, while working as a BT Sport pundit for the game on Sunday, said Chelsea need two players in midfield and wing back.
“If we’re talking about quality, I still think Chelsea have that quality, but when Conte was at Juventus he used to do the same thing in the summer. He used to push the club to buy more players to move forward.
“It’s not a tactical move, but I’m sure Conte can go to the board and say he needs more players. They need another central midfielder, and they need cover in the wing-back roles.”
Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday against Burnley at Stamford Bridge.
