Gary Neville is surprised by Chelsea’s decision to ditch Nemanja Matic.

Matic has left the Premier League champions for a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United yesterday.

United have splashed out £40m for the 29-year-old and Neville thinks he’ll be a good fit at Old Trafford.

But he can’t get his head around Chelsea’s decision to sell.

“Michael Carrick’s obviously got one more year but he can’t play every single week so they’ve got to have that player come in and do the same job,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I believe Nemanja Matic can do that.

“United need a holding midfield player.

“Schneiderlin was let go earlier this year, Schweinsteiger didn’t get a game.

“There needed to be a replacement in there and ultimately I think Matic will fit the bill.

“It’s a strange one for Chelsea to let him go because I thought he was good for them with Kante and I think they need to strengthen.

“So I’m not sure why he’s been let go so they must have replacements in hand.”

Antonio Conte thinks he can turn Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into a world-class wingback.

That’s according to the Express who say the champions are readying a £25m move for the Arsenal midfielder.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s days at The Emirates could be numbered as his contract only has 12 months left to run.

He has rejected a fresh proposal and is thought to be looking for more game time.

The England ace made just 16 Premier League starts last term.

He did feature at wing back for the Gunners and Conte sees real potential for the 23-year-old in that position.

Chelsea have registered an interest in Danny Drinkwater.

Sky Sports say the Blues think he is the man to replace Matic at Stamford Bridge.

Conte has already sounded out Bayern Munich about a potential loan move for Portuguese wonderkid Renato Sanches.

However, Chelsea might find it difficult to lure Dinkwater away from the 2016 Premier League champions.

He recently signed a four-year contract at the King Power and appears settled in Leicester.
