Chelsea target flying in for medical

Chelsea are edging ever closer to securing the signing of Davide Zappacosta from Torino.

Pictured by Italian news outlet Di Marzio, the right-sided full-back is jetting off to England as he looks to wrap up his deadline day move to the Blues, which was revealed earlier on today.

Antonio Conte has been keen to bolster his wide options throughout the course of the summer and it looks as though he has finally struck a deal late on.

Zappacosta enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with Torino last season and caught the eye of many top clubs across Europe, but it is Chelsea who will tie up a deal for him if medical examinations and personal terms go to plan.

The Premier League champions have agreed a deal to bring the right-back to Stamford Bridge after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain snubbed them for Liverpool.

Zappacosta is relatively unknown to many, but BT Sport pundit Horncastle says the defender is highly rated by Blues boss Antonio Conte.

“Conte was the first manager to call Zappacosta up to the Italy squad,” he said.

“He’s a wing-back but has lost his place at Torino in the last season because the manager has gone to a back four. He’s a little bit too attacking to play as a normal full-back.

“But he’s still someone who is trusted not only by Antonio Conte but also Italy’s current manager Gian Piero Ventura. He likes to play with a 3-5-2 formation.”

Chelsea have been linked with moves for several wing-backs this summer as they look to bolster their defence ahead of returning to the Champions League.

Horncastle, though, feels the addition of Zappacosta is merely an average one.

“This time last year on deadline day when Chelsea signed Marcos Alonso I was more positive on that than a lot of other people,” he said.

“It was clear Alonso had had a very good season for Fiorentina and really fitted the brief of what Antonio Conte wanted.

“Zappacosta is an OK player but for €25m (£23m), Torino to some extent are laughing all the way to the bank.

“To get that kind of price for a player who isn’t a starter for them is pretty damn good.”

The Blues will look to tie up more deals before the transfer window closes later on tonight, but it appears as though Zappacosta will be the first man through the door on what promises to be an eventful climax to the summer.

More Breaking News:

Fernando Llorente is having a medical at Tottenham as his chances of a move to Chelsea recede.

The Swansea striker has been linked with a move all summer with Stamford Bridge always having appeared the most likely destination.

However Spurs have made a late move for Llorente and are making serious progress.

A fee of around £14million has been agreed for the Spaniard, who according to reports is undergoing a medical with the Wembley-based club.

That information would suggest a move to Chelsea is now unlikely, despite the player allegedly preferring a move to Stamford Bridge.

Llorente worked with Antonio Conte at Juventus and would become the back-up to Alvaro Morata of he were to move there. However the Blues, who have held talks with Swansea, have not made a formal bid.

Tottenham are seeking back-up of their own – in their case to Harry Kane. Current deputy Vincent Janssen, signed last summer, has failed to prove himself capable of the role. Llorente scored 15 Premier League goals last season.
