However it was undone immediately after Pedro was sent off as Arsenal came from behind with Sead Kolasinac scoring with a header.
Arsenal only half-cleared Willian’s right-wing corner and when Gary Cahill headed back into the penalty area, Moses was unchallenged and able to steer the ball past former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech from close range.
Alexandre Lacazette hit the post during a first half in which Arsenal looked the more threatening.
Summer signing Lacazette was lively for the Gunners and a move which started with him spraying the ball out to Hector Bellerin on the right ended with the French striker curling a right-footed shot against the woodwork from the near the edge of the penalty area.
Earlier, Lacazette was just unable to apply the finishing touch after Alex Iwobi had gone past David Luiz and pulled the ball back from the left.
And Granit Xhaka sent in a high ball from the left towards Danny Welbeck, who headed straight at Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois.
Arsenal lost their captain Per Mertesacker after half an hour when the German went off with a bloodied forehead after Gary Cahill caught him with an arm during an aerial challenge.
As Chelsea enjoyed more possession late in the first half, Pedro’s shot brought a save from Cech and Willian was booked for diving after going down in the penalty area claiming he had been tripped by Bellerin.
Arsenal have had plenty of possession since going behind but Chelsea look dangerous on the counter attack. But it all went to Penalties as the score at full time was 1-1.
Thibaut Courtois and Petr Cech were between the sticks while Chelsea were one short for the shootout thanks to red card. Cech was the first to face a penalty of the two goalkeepers and Cahill slotted with ease in the left corner. Arsenal too scored with their first kick against Courtois. Courtois skied a penalty he took followed by Morata fizzling his. Arsenal kept scoring theirs. Chelsea were without some of their best Penalty takers.
