CHELSEA star Nemanja Matic is nearing a move to Manchester United in a blow to Serie A giants Juventus, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Manchester United are keen to make Matic their midfield lynchpin under Jose Mourinho next term.
Mourinho wants a reunion with the Chelsea midfielder after being knocked back by Tottenham, who are reluctant to let Eric Dier move to Old Trafford given past dealings.
Matic himself supposedly wants a move to Manchester, with the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco signalling an end to his Stamford Bridge career.
Juventus, as well as Manchester United, have expressed an interest in signing the Serbia international.
But Di Marzio says the Red Devils are in pole position to sign Matic.
The 28-year-old could help coax the best out of Paul Pogba.
Pogba toiled after arriving from Juventus 12 months ago, but Mourinho is hopeful the arrival of a midfield general will help the France international hit his stride.
Di Marzio adds that Juventus will now consequently turn their attentions to Blaise Matuidi, who is being tipped to leave Paris Saint-Germain.
United legend Gary Pallister, meanwhile, thinks Matic would be the perfect signing.
“Matic is a physical presence and apart from [Marouane] Fellaini we have quite a small midfield,” Pallister told 888sport.
“When we looked at United last season we lacked that presence and Matic will certainly bring that.
“He’s an excellent player though and it would be a surprise if Chelsea were prepared to let him go.”
