Chelsea have held positive talks with Romelu Lukaku over a club record return to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The Blues are keen on re-signing the Belgian with Diego Costa likely to agree to a big money move to Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjin.
Lukaku, 23, is thought to favour a return to west London this summer but Manchester United have increased their interest after going cold on a deal for Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann.
The Belgian’s agent, Mino Raiola, has close ties to Jose Mourinho after sending three of his clients – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – to Old Trafford last year.
Chelsea are aware of United’s renewed interest and have accelerated talks with the Belgian, according to the Mirror.
Everton value Lukaku at around £100million and, though Chelsea are unwilling to part with that sum, they will need to smash their club record to re-sign the Belgian which currently stands at £50m.
United had laid the groundwork on a deal for Griezmann for over six months but the upholding of Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban proved to be a decisive factor in the Frenchman’s decision to stay in La Liga.
Griezmann tweeted late on Thursday night declaring: ‘Now more than ever’ with the hashtag of #Atleti.
