Despite a late £35m bid from Chelsea for Kostas Manolas, the Roma defender was still expected to complete a £26m move to Zenit St. Petersburg this summer.
The Greek centre-back is regarded as one of the best Serie A has to offer and is was quite a coup for Zenit to persuade the club to make the move to Russia, but reports today claim that Manolas has failed to show up for his medical ahead of completing a move.
Sky Sports are claiming that Manolas is holding off completing a move to Zenit over a dispute regarding how he will be paid his wages.
Manolas is demanding that his wages are paid to him in Euros as opposed to Roubles as it’s a much more stable currency.
Should they not be able to overcome this dispute, this could open the door for Chelsea to re-enter the race to sign the centre-back this summer.
We know Antonio Conte wants to sign a centre-back this summer but after a move for Leonardo Bonucci was ruled out by Massimiliano Allegri, the Blues have been sent back to square one in their efforts to buy one.
As Manolas’ transfer draws out, the Blues could be tempted to up their offer to the player in order to persuade him to come to the Premier League.
