GARY NEVILLE says he was shocked when Chelsea boss Antonio Conte signed David Luiz last summer.
Luiz re-joined Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain for £34million after leaving Stamford Bridge inn 2014.
The Brazilian has starred in the centre of defence for the Blues, who are just three points away from winning the Premier League title.
And Manchester United legend Neville has praised the impact Conte has had on Luiz’s career.
“The one thing that surprised me and shocked me was the signing of Luiz,” he said on Sky Sports.
“I did not think for one minute he would be a Conte-type player.
“I think of those three centre-backs he had of Chiellini, Buzagli and Bonucci with Juventus and Italy. They were hard, solid brilliant defenders. You can’t get through them.
“The way he’s got Luiz playing, I think he’s simplified his game a lot more.
“He’s got the two lads in front being protective and he’s got Luiz behind doing what Luiz does best, he can be a commanding personality.
“Big credit to him, he’s done a brilliant job.”
