Chelsea star is staying
The Sunday Times are calling it.
Chelsea wrapped up the Premier League title on Friday at the Hawthorns. It’s the fifth time they’ve won the EPL trophy, and the sixth time the club have won the English championship in their history.
Antonio Conte can finish the season a double winner if the Blues beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final.
Having been crowned champs, the papers are now considering what summer changes may be ahead at Stamford Bridge.
The Sunday Telegraph talk about Conte’s 200 million pound warchest, while the Sunday Times report how a top Chelsea star is set to remain in west London.
What’s the update?
Belgium international stopper Thibaut Courtois has long been listed as a Real Madrid target, but after securing the title at West Brom the goalie made the following statement, as reported in the Times:
Thibaut Courtois assured fans he’s staying in the wake of clinching the title. “I am committed to Chelsea,” he said and the goalkeeper expressed hope his compatriot Eden Hazard will also ignore interest from Real Madrid.
“We need him with us to achieve great moments. And next season there is a new goal of the Champions League, so a lot of players are hungry for winning that as well,” he added.
25-year-old Courtois is under contract with the Blues until 2019.
The Sunday Times also look at who Chelsea might sign this summer, which sets off alarm bells for the Gunners and the likely Ligue 1 champs:
Conte needs better striking options and Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata are Chelsea’s two long-term targets.
There is also serious interest in Alexis Sanchez.
Conte is keen on another centre-back and Chelsea were among the several top clubs monitoring Michael Keane, who is likely to return to Manchester United. The Monaco powerhouse Tiemoue Bakayoko is being lined up to reinforce Conte’s midfield, and their left-back Benjamin Mendy is another target.
On the suggestions that Alexis Sanchez could swap Arsenal for Chelsea, it’s worth noting how the Chilean hinted that he could remain with the Gunners after he scored v Stoke on Saturday.
