Antonio Conte – “I don’t understand these reports”

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has dismissed reports that he is unhappy with his level of influence on the club’s transfer policy and said he and the club always work together to find the “right solution.”

Recent reports in Italy and England have said Conte feels he does not have enough of a voice in Chelsea’s recruitment structure and was disappointed with the decision not to sanction significant spending in January.

Of their four major signings last summer, only N’Golo Kante was a top target, although David Luiz and Marcos Alonso became key contributors to the surge to the top of the Premier League.

There have even been claims that Conte wants assurances of more influence over transfer decisions before he agrees to sign a new contract, but he told a news conference: “I don’t understand [the reports] because you can read this situation and it’s not true.

“Honestly, I have a good relationship and when I need something I speak with the club.

“We always find a way to try and find the right solution, but always together. It’s very difficult to always take the right solution, but we always take the decision together.”

Conte also said that with Chelsea in the midst of a Premier League title challenge, he felt no urgency to engage in talks to extend his current contract, which runs until June 2019.

“It’s the same, the same every week,” he added. “We have a target [to win the title] and it’s important we concentrate on trying to reach that target.

“I repeat: I’m very happy to be Chelsea’s coach and I want to continue in this way for many years.”
