Whilst Chelsea have plenty of money to spend in the January transfer window, partly due to the departure of Oscar to China, there has been huge excitement surrounding Nathan Ake’s return from Bournemouth.
Ake impressed on loan at both Watford and Bournemouth and adds options for Antonio Conte, with the Dutchman able to play as a centre back or left sided defender in the 3-4-3.
Marcos Alonso is carrying an injury
On Tuesday, the Evening Standard revealed that part of the reason Conte brought Nathan Ake back was due to a worry over Marcos Alonso.
Ever since joining from Fiorentina, Alonso has been excellent for Chelsea, playing in their last 14 Premier League matches.
However, Alonso has been troubled by a minor leg injury since August. The muscular discomfort has been getting worse over the last few weeks and there are concerns that he will need to be replaced by Ake.
The young Dutchman will also allow Alonso to rest and recuperate for certain matches and it seems likely that Conte is now preparing Ake in the left wing back role.
This youngster is set to become ‘very important’ for Chelsea, claims ex-teammate
Chelsea ace Nathan Ake will become very important for the Blues, according to former teammate Artur Boruc.
The goalkeeper, who played alongside the defender at Bournemouth, believes that the Dutchman is set to make a big impact at Stamford Bridge after being recalled from his loan with the Cherries.
‘Of course – I think that’s why they brought him there,’ the Poland international told told Sky Sports.
‘He’s going to fight for his spot. He’s a very talented player. He can be very important for the team.’
Ake made ten Premier League appearances for the south coast outfit before moving on, earning a place in the starting line-up after beginning the season as a substitute.
The 21-year-old’s versatility could make him especially vital for the Blues, with the youngster able to cover the left wing-back, centre-back, and centre-midfield roles in the first team.
He will also be a major loss for Bournemouth, who have had the Netherlands under-21s international to thank for several important goals as they have surpassed expectations to sit ninth in the Premier League.
Chelsea ace: Why Antonio Conte is the best manager I’ve ever worked under
DAVID LUIZ has been effusive in his praise for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
After a tepid start, Chelsea went on a 13-game winning streak in the Premier League.
Tottenham ended their impressive run last week, but Conte’s men are five points clear at the top of the table.
Luiz, who re-joined the club last summer from Paris Saint-Germain, has been central to Chelsea’s remarkable form.
And the Brazilian has revealed why he loves working under the Italian tactician.
“Conte is a coach who loves what he does and it infects all of us who love football,” Luiz told ESPN Brazil.
“Every training and every game is a manifestation of how winning and competing is important to him, so for us the motivation to keep focus is always high.
“He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever worked with. He knows very well the characteristics of each player and we follow exactly what he guides us to do on the pitch.”
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back in the league on Saturday when they take on Leicester (5:30pm).
