MARTIN KEOWN says Chelsea defender David Luiz has played a huge part in their turnaround in fortunes.
After finishing 10th in the Premier League last season, Chelsea had a less than convincing start to the campaign with defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal most notable.
But ever since Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation at half-time of the 3-0 defeat at The Emirates, they haven’t conceded a goal.
Top of the table Chelsea have won their last six games and Keown has pinpointed Luiz’s return to the club as a big reason for this.
“It has been very successful,” he wrote in the Mail.
“You’d have to say his return has been linked to their success.
“Antonio Conte has been able to play three at the back because of Luiz.
“Given the centre halves who were available, it was a good bit of business.
“Conte will have had one eye on the bigger picture, knowing it could let him play his preferred system.”
Chelsea play unbeaten Tottenham this Saturday at Stamford Bridge and Keown reckons Spurs will have to counteract the impressive formation.
“It will be interesting to see how Tottenham deal with Chelsea’s back three,” he added.
“Whenever we played against a three, we wanted to get the ball wide and create an overload on the sides.
“Tottenham’s task will be to force Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses back.”
