Marcos Alonso is a poor replacement for Ryan Bertrand, former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins has claimed.
Bertrand was sold to Southampton in 2015 after a successful loan spell and Wilkins thinks he is dearly missed at Stamford Bridge.
“I’m not too sure about Alonso on the left hand side,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.
“I would prefer Ryan Bertrand there but they sold him for £10m and brought in Alonso for £30m. I can’t quite add up that maths.
Antonio Conte has acted coy over the potential return of Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge should he leave MLS.
“Frank Lampard has been a great player, a fantastic player for Chelsea. He won a lot with this team,” Conte said.
“But now, for me, he’s still playing and for this reason I don’t know his future.
“I have great respect for him. For me it’s very difficult to reply to the question when the question starts ‘if’. It’s important to know that.”
Eden Hazard struggled against Middlesbrough because he took a few knocks early on in the game, according to Pat Nevin.
“Eden Hazard has put in a hell of a shift but he has not had his best game,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“You always come to see a player like him play – you want to see something extra special.
“But he had a couple of knocks early on which seemed to slow him down a little I think.”
