The one thing that has been crystal clear in the past few weeks about Chelsea is that the defence is in a full blown crisis. First Swansea, then Liverpool, then Leicester City, and finally at Arsenal – Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in each of these matches.
Chelsea were lucky to come away with a win at the King Power Stadium but suffered losses at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal and humiliating ones at that. And it is no coincidence that it is in John Terry’s absence, that Chelsea have started looking so penetrable. Players like Gary Cahill and Ivanovic have been found wanting in defence, with no leader to organise the backline.
Numerous Chelsea fans were not quite satisfied with the re-signing of David Luiz, but ironically, it is him who has been the most solid among the other defenders. John Terry’s injury, compounded with Zouma’s absence, has put the Blues in a spot of real bother and has forced the board’s hand at considering defensive options, that too in the Premier League itself.
