It may come as a surprise to you all but, the new boy Papy Djilobodji, who was signed to provide depth in our Central Defense, after the continued horror shows by Blues at the back, has not been included in our Champions League squad submitted to UEFA for the group stages game.
First of all, let’s take a look at what the UEFA rule says in this matter:
The rule states that clubs can name no more than 25 senior players. Out of those 25 players, a minimum of eight should be “club trained” and “association trained” players.
And as it stands out, Mourinho chose to include both Bertrand Traore and Robert Kenedy in the Champions League squad as opposed to Papy Djilobodji.
After the loaning of Victor Moses, who could have counted as a homegrown player, we are a bit light on the Attacking Midfield department. Perhaps that’s why, Mourinho chose to include both the youngsters ahead of the 26-year-old defender.
Although, it might raise a few eyebrows, but in a way, it does look like a sensible decision given our group stage should be an easy matter to deal with while, the 26-year-old would probably need some time to gel with the other players. Remember, the squad is just for the group stages of the competition!
Anyways, here’s the list of players we submitted to UEFA:
Goalkeepers: Begovic, Courtois, Blackman
Defenders: Ivanovic, Zouma, Baba, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta
Midfielders: Fabregas, Ramires, Oscar, Hazard, Mikel, Traore, Kenedy, Matic, Willian, Pedro
Strikers: Falcao, Remy, Costa
