A comfortable win was what everyone expected and that’s exactly what we got against the Saddlers yesterday.
Remember, League One opponents, most often than not, can be very tricky and the League Cup is famous for being a giant killing competition anyway. After the start we have had to this season, it was important that we got past Walsall to continue our recent good form by playing some good football. Mourinho, in the post-match ceremony iterated the same fact too:
“It was not easy. We started very well. Immediately we had one or two chances, we scored the goal and we showed them that despite the fact they are a good side and they play good football we were not here to make mistakes and throw the competition away.
“When you start the season with bad results like we have, we could not lose against a League One team. You can do that when the season is fantastic and you are top of the league, but to lose a game against a League One team now wouldn’t be good for us. We don’t need that bad feeling, we need good feelings. The team was strong and played well. I’m happy with the result and individually it was good for the players too.”
Talking about individual performances; Loic Remy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Robert Kenedy, Mikel and Ramires had a great game and Mourinho did mention that in his post match interview:
“John was solid, normal, no problem. We brought a good solid defence. The midfield was really good. Mikel and Ramires played amazingly well.
“It was a good game for Falcao, a good 90 mins – important for fitness. He worked a lot, ran a lot, moved a lot. He was in the game a lot. For the first time this season he was on the pitch for a long, long time so it was a good game for him.
“Kenedy played well. He was having pain in one calf, so I had to take him off, but a nice performance for him, good experience, more minutes on the pitch. It was good for all of them.”
Robert Kenedy was definitely the Man of the Match for the Blues along with Ramires for his performance last night where the Brazilian also scored his first goal in the Blue shirt. As Mourinho said; John Terry was solid as usual and Falcao missed some excellent chances to get on the scoresheet. Gotta work on that shooting!
The Portuguese was also full of praise for our opponent, Walsall, who played well despite what the scoreline said at the end of the game. Instead of going all physical like the other minnows, the home said tried to play some actual football and that was one thing that really impressed our manager:
“I am always worried against teams with great belief. After 3-1, we could feel like it was game over but before that everything was open. They created chances and fought hard.
“I analysed them before. I watched a couple of their matches in League One. I was surprised with the quality of their play. They are a different team to normal in League One – not so physical, but technically fast. They were very well organised.
“I have years of cups in this country and I haven’t found a team in League One playing the quality of football they tried to play.”

With Stoke City (away) as our fourth round opponent, the road is only going to get difficult for the defending Champions. Well, at least, we are back in form now. Now let’s concentrate on the Premier League!
