Lately, I can’t stop wondering what would have happened if Filipe Luis had decided to stick around with Chelsea.
Let me tell you what would have happened. We would never have been in for Baba Rahman. Branislav Ivanovic would have already been dropped to the bench, Cesar Azpilicueta would have shifted to his rightful place as a Right Back and Filipe Luis would finally be starting every game.
But, I guess, Filipe didn’t see it coming. I guess, no one did. I mean, who would have thought Ivanovic will age 50 years in a matter of months? Oh Filipe, if you could just stay..
But as it turns out, the Brazilians had already had his heart set for an Atletico return since a long time. In a frank interview, Filipe Lluis discloses that deep down he never quite adjusted to the London life and a return was always on the cards:
“I’m very happy. I was delighted when I found out that Atletico wanted to take me back. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me.
So, what about Diego Costa and Courtois? Do they miss Atletico too?
“We have never lost the affection that we had for Atletico Madrid.
“We would meet up to see their games. I remember when they played the Super Cup [last summer] and Diego and myself were in the team hotel and we went down to the reception of the hotel to see the game on the computer.
“I always missed the club. I was never able to move on. Perhaps I should have forgotten about them but I kept on watching the games and talking to former team-mates or sending them messages. I never cut the roots I have in this club.
The rumors about Diego wanting an Atletico return may not be rumors at all then. I don’t see Thibaut Courtois leaving the Bridge anytime soon, but with Diego Costa, it is possible. I guess we will have to wait and see.
The fullback also talked about his struggles at Chelsea. The Brazilian, often considered as the best fullback in Europe, was more often than not, beaten by Cesar Azpilicueta for the starting spot. Luis, who was used to start every game for Atletico, couldn’t quite take this change and instead of fighting for his spot, he decided to leave:
“When I arrived at Chelsea I had got used to playing 50 games and suddenly I was sharing my position with another player.
“That makes you feel less important. It’s almost all the same players. The club has only improved and it feels like I have not really been away.”

I can’t say I have anything against Luis. We barely got to know him anyway. Atletico Madrid was where his love lied and it’s quite right he went back there at the end. But, I still can’t shake the feeling that only if he had stayed, he would be starting regularly..
