Opposition Scouting Report: Maccabi Tel Aviv

Champions League is back as Chelsea look set to kick off the tournament against Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv. The fixture promises to be an intriguing one as Chelsea are having one of the most awful starts to the season, and this match could just be the point from which Jose Mourinho could resurrect his catastrophic campaign. So without much ado let’s analyze the Israeli unit whom Chelsea will face.

Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club is an Israeli football club and part of the Maccabi Tel Aviv sports. Founded in 1906[1] as the Ha Rishon Le Zion-Yafo Association, Maccabi Tel Aviv are the oldest, largest and most decorated football club in Israel. With the establishment of the city of Tel Aviv in 1909, the club changed their name to Maccabi Tel Aviv. In 1922, they became the first Jewish football club to participate in local competitions.

The meaning of the name Maccabi ‘Who is like thee among the gods’ – forms an integral part of the character of the team, which took the Star of David as their logo to represent the Jewish people. Maccabi Tel Aviv have won more titles than any other Israeli club, winning 22 League Championships (17 after Israeli independence), 23 prestigious State Cups (16 after Israeli independence), two AFC Champions League Cup and an additional five Toto League Cups.

Recent Form:
M. Tel Aviv have played a total of seven competitive games this season, out of which four matches were for Champions League spot, they won once in this four games, drew twice and lost once.

Apart from that, they have played three games in the Israeli Premier League in which they won twice and drew once. Having a look at the recent form a win might not be a guarantee but it’s the least we expect as the club shouldn’t be much of a problem for the opening fixture of the Champions League.

Injuries and Suspensions:
The Maccabi Tel Aviv team has one suspension and one injury. The right back Eli Dasa is suspended as he received a red card in the last match. While the Nigerian midfielder Emmanuel Nosakhare Igiebor is out injured. The midfielder is suffering from a knock that he suffered in the match against Hapoel Shmona.

Strengths: Key Player-Eran Zahavi
Zahavi can occupy any attacking spot and can play as an attacking midfielder, left wing and right wing. The Israeli attacker has scored seven goals in five games for Maccabi Tel Aviv. Apart from that, the attacker has assisted his teammates with three goals. He could possibly be a threat if not kept a check on.

While, a win is a must to raise the confidence among the group before the crunch game against Arsenal on the weekend, it is also an opportunity for Mourinho to test his bench strength. A debut for Baba Rahman and Traore/Kenedy is a possibility while, Remy is also expected to start for us!
