Newcastle vs. Chelsea – Key Player Battles

Chelsea next face the wrath of a ridiculously poor Newcastle United at St. James Park in the Premier League.

Wrath, simply because this is one of Jose’s tougher visits. The Portuguese manager has only gotten 2 points over 5 visits to the Toon in the Northeast of England. The match will be a good one, let’s look ahead at a few key player battles in this fixture.

Fabricio Coloccini vs Loic Remy

With Diego Costa suspended, it might well be Loic Remy starting for Chelsea, especially considering that he scored in the League Cup fixture against Walsall. Also, he had played a season on loan while at QPR, hence the blades of grass are more familiar to him. Remy is a very good striker with good movement, and he is clinical and, therefore, the Toon backline will have to be alert because one slip is all it could take to give Chelsea the win.

Meanwhile, Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was really impressive in this fixture last season and will have to be again if Newcastle are to emerge with a clean sheet and at least a point. It doesn’t look that good though for the captain, and the club as they are rock bottom in the League and haven’t managed a win yet. The defense looks to be in shambles, and even Coloccini is in horrible form off late.

Georginio Wijnaldum vs. Nemanja Matic

Amongst all of Newcastle’s problems this season, one player that has been a real positive is midfielder Wijnaldum. The Dutchman, who moved from PSV Eindhoven in the summer, has all that it takes to be a good premier league player but has showed glimpses of his style so far. His linkup play with the likes of Cisse and Thauvin has been good.

The Dutchman will, however, be up against Nemanja Matic, who is a real beast. The Serbian has picked up his form after a poor start to the campaign, and if he looks like himself against the Newcastle attack, Mourinho might as well get his first win at Newcastle.

Daryl Janmaat vs. Eden Hazard

Janmaat has been the shining star of Newcastle United so far in the season. The right back has usually found himself the furthest man forward for the Toons and probably has been the only positive for them. He has also found his name in the score sheet as well, scoring once each in the Capital One Cup and against Watford in the Premier League.

However, he is up against the League’s best player Eden Hazard. The Player of the Year looked to have his swagger back against Arsenal last weekend and will hope to score against Newcastle, after his goal getting disallowed against Arsenal. Janmaat might be specifically told to stay behind to play against the talismanic Belgian, and this will hamper the Toons going forward.
