Jose Mourinho Talks About Loftus-Cheek’s Performance – He’s A Very Good Player!

I gotta be honest here. When I first saw Ruben Loftus-Cheek first time last season, he was amazing with the ball, but off the ball, he was lazy and complacent!

Even Jose Mourinho acknowledged this fact and criticized the 19-year-old midfielder a couple of months back with the following statement:

“Ruben was saying he had a pain in his back but what I was feeling was that he only had this pain when Sydney had the ball. When Chelsea had the ball he was playing very well but when Sydney had the ball I think he was more impressed by watching [John] Mikel Obi and [Nemanja] Matic work, instead of him working himself.

So, with Ruben, it’s one step back in terms of my relationship with him. If he doesn’t know what it means to play for me and Chelsea, it’s one step back.

A bit harsh, you say? Well, with the potential and the talent the young midfielder possesses, I don’t think it was harsh from Mourinho to criticize the youngster and motivate him to work harder than ever.

A couple of months have passed since that incident and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is looking a much-improved player these days. Maybe, the harsh words from Mourinho did work after all! The Englishman was arguably the best player on the pitch yesterday with a brilliant performance in the midfield.

Here’s what Mourinho had to say on the Englishman’s performance:

“I think he [Loftus-Cheek] played very well which is very good for us,” he told reporters.

“I think he is in conditions to compete with the others for positions and minutes but he is having minutes.

“He played already in the Premier League this season, now in the Champions league. He’s potentially a very good player.”

A statement, that is a sharp contrast to the older one!

The youngster, after all, do deserve every praise in the world after yesterday’s showing and is probably in contention to start the weekend game against Arsenal. Consistency is the key with inexperienced youngsters, and if RLC can continue his good form in the Blue shirt, he could very well be the first player to walk in John Terry’s footsteps!
