It’s becoming a thing with us, isn’t it!
I believe a vast majority of the Chelsea fans would have been as gobsmacked as me when Chelsea decided to sign Michael Hector from Reading.
An unknown Championship Centre Back who hasn’t really been talked about; what were we doing anyway?
After wrapping up the deal for Papy Djilobodji, it didn’t make sense going for another defender. Later, it only turned out to be only a loan deal and that made much more sense as far as we were concerned. Michael Hector is a 23-year-old Centre Back who made 49 appearances for Reading last season while, also Captaining Reading this past week. A deal for 4 Million pounds seems plausible.
But, as it turns out, we weren’t the only one in for the young CentreBack!
Club Chairman Steve Parish has confirmed that they had almost completed the deal for Hector before Chelsea intervened/Gazumped/Willianed/Pedro’d this deal:
“We had a deal for Michael Hector at Reading and that was a done deal. We thought we had that one.
“Unfortunately the might of Chelsea came in and the player chose to go there. But at least we’re getting the right targets, aren’t we? Our scouting set-up must be doing the right thing.
“You don’t win them all. We live to fight another day. I’m sure he’ll do very well at Chelsea. We don’t hold any grudges. I think he supported them as a kid.”

Wow, such beautifully put! I have nothing but respect for Steve Parish after this.
Instead of moaning and crying like an Arsene Wenger, Parish took it on the chin and moved on, realizing there’s no point arguing over it. Palace already have a very good squad, capable of finishing in the top 8 with some luck, and with a Chairman like him, they are bound to succeed in the future!
Oh, and yes, Hector was a boyhood Chelsea fan!
