The signing of Michael Hector left everyone by surprise on the deadline day.
The fact that he was immediately sent back on loan to Reading did make a bit of sense. But still, an unknown commodity, that no one really had really heard of, the fans wanted to know about our latest signing.
In this article, we will bring you some important quotes from his former team-mate that will help you understand and analyse the man, the Centre Back; Michael Hector!
Former Bees skipper Anwar Uddin sat down with Sky Sports and answered few questions regarding the abilities and talents of the Jamaican:
“It’s great seeing him play regularly for Reading and moving up to the highest level of the game with Chelsea but playing on loan at lots of lower division teams has really aided his development.
“It’s important that lower league clubs can help develop and groom these superstars and play a part in the development of the next generation of household names.
“Players like Michael Hector will always be synonymous with the clubs he went on loan to, in the same way everyone associated with Preston is proud they had a young David Beckham on loan.
“For me that’s quite romantic and something that is a good tradition we have in England, that connection between the lower leagues and the elite level.
That’s a very interesting things what Anwar says here. Most of the young players and the academy players in the Premier League don’t want to go to the lower division, thinking it as a step-down from elite football. But, apparently, that’s where you learn your basics and Hector has been no different.
“A lot of young players perceive it as failure when a manager pulls you into his office and says you should go on loan to play regularly in the lower leagues. But the reality is that the possibilities are endless and this shows young players that with hard work and determination there is the possibility that you can slowly make your way to the top.
“I would advise any player aiming to break into the first-team at their respective clubs to go and play regular competitive football in the lower leagues.”
“Coming on loan as a young player can be difficult but Michael was a good lad who fitted in really well,”
“He had bags of ability, a really good attitude and a great work ethic. He was a breath of fresh air and definitely one I could see doing really well if he continued to improve.
Anwar has been showering heaps of praises on the young Centre Back and that is a promising sign. The 23-year-old has even Captained Reading at such a young age which shows how mature and talented he is at his age.
Anwar even compared the youngster to Rio Ferdinand in terms of capabilities.
Now, I know, Rio ain’t the most beloved man across the Stamford Bridge, but there was no doubt about his qualities when he was in his prime. A brilliant Centre Back, who was very good on the ball, Rio was probably one of the best of his time, alongside John Terry of course.
“He reminded me a little bit of Rio Ferdinand. There are definite similarities between the two. I don’t want to put any added pressure on him because Rio Ferdinand was probably the best centre-half I played with and one of the best centre-halves in the world in his prime.
“Rio had a number of attributes. He wanted to play and was very comfortable on the ball. You could have played him in midfield and he wouldn’t have looked out of place. He (Hector) was also very comfortable on the ball but he also made the right decisions more often than not.”

Woah! If what Anwar’s been saying is true, I say we have a very good defender on our hands. With, John Terry set to retire and Gary Cahill, not the elite and not the best we are looking for, Michael Hector could very well turn out to be a good signing in the end.
Hopefully, he has a very good season at Reading and forces his way into our first team straight away next season instead of going out on loan again!
