The Champions Chelsea finally got their first win of the season, beating a spirited West Brom side 3-2. It was a tense affair, with Chelsea down to 10 men for the last 30 minutes or so. Let’s take a look at the talking points after this match.
Pedro is made for the Premier League
There was hardly any doubt before he kicked a ball for Chelsea that he’d be a success. The La Masia graduate was brilliant on his debut, scoring one, setting up another and rarely giving the ball away, while working his socks off when Chelsea didn’t have the ball. He was so good that the fans were heard singing many times, “Are you watching Manchester?” What is even more hilarious is the fact that Pedro has scored the same no. of goals as Manchester United have in their first three matches so far.
It’s all up against the wall for John Terry
Mr. Chelsea, John Terry, who played every minute of every Premier League game last season is in some trouble. The charismatic captain has been in shocking form off-late, getting substituted at half-time against Manchester City and now getting a red card, albeit harsh. John has now got himself a 3-week break, his ban against Crystal Palace next weekend and the 2-week international break after that. He needs to seriously improve his performances, or his career might be over sooner than it seemed last season.
Branislav Ivanovic- What’s wrong with him?
Serbian full-back and Chelsea vice-captain has been another out of form player for Chelsea this season. He was destroyed by Montero of Swansea City and was directly responsible for Manchester City’s second and third goals. Now, he was again caught napping in the build-up to West Brom’s second goal. Such horrible displays certainly do ask questions whether the big man can make it to the starting eleven next weekend.
Chelsea still needs a couple more signings
Unexpectedly, Chelsea have conceded the most number of shots this season, something not to be proud of. This, coupled with the fact that two of the stalwarts of last season’s success are in horrible form, has made the board and the manager go back to the drawing board. Sure, the signing of Pedro was a welcome addition to the team. But the team still needs a defensive signing like John Stones, whom the Blues have been chasing all season and Paul Pogba, who’d guarantee Chelsea of European domination for the next decade. Whether or not we can get it in the last week of the transfer window remains to be seen.
Chelsea are back, even if partially
After a bad pre-season and an even worse start to the season, Chelsea finally got going against West Brom and got the three points. Even though it wasn’t the complete performance, it was a start; a foundation on which the team can build on to try and defend the title so easily won last season.
