Things We Learned From Chelsea’s Defeat Against Fiorentina

Chelsea registered their second consecutive defeat in 3 days as the Italian club Fiorentina ran rampant at Stamford Bridge, winning the game 1-0. Let’s look at a few talking points after that defeat just 3 days before the start of the new season.

Chelsea misses Diego Costa

The title says it all. 20 goal Diego Costa scored two goals in 10 minutes against Real Sociedad in the final friendly fixture at Stamford Bridge last season. But last night, he wasn’t even on the bench, as the hamstrings continued to trouble the fearless center forward. His presence was sorely missed, as neither Remy nor Falcao could come close to a good performance in the 45 minutes, allotted to each. Even though Falcao’s movement certainly showed glimpses of the beast he was at Atletico Madrid; it goes without saying, Chelsea look a far better side with Costa out on the pitch.

Bertrand Traore looked Decent at the left flank

Traore, back from his season and a half loan from Vitesse, has looked decent in the pre-season matches so far. On Wednesday, he continued that good run, with a slightly nervy yet a decent performance. Although his left flank position is covered by the irreplaceable Eden Hazard, he can certainly be a handful as a rotation player in his first season in England or maybe even provide cover at the Left Back?

Ola Aina could have a bright future

With fullback Felipe Luis leaving Chelsea to move back to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea had a shortage of fullbacks. In stepped Ola Aina. The 18-year-old from London had a solid first half, playing as a right fullback. Until the Blues buy a replacement for Luis, Aina can step in and possibly cover the either flank. After Ruben Loftus Cheek, maybe Ola Aina could be the next academy player to stay with the first team, without going on loan.

Victor Moses or Juan Cuadrado?

After it seemed like Moses’ Chelsea career was most certainly over, the Nigerian has admirably stepped up to prove his critics wrongs with some stellar performances. Probably the Blues’ best player so far, he has made a strong statement to start against Swansea. Meanwhile, Cuadrado still looked horrible on the pitch yesterday. Losing the ball whenever in possession has become the hallmark of the Colombian. Maybe he doesn’t the suit the Premier League, after all? Needless to say, Moses has won the battle of the wings ahead of Juan in preseason!

Chelsea still needs to improve

With all the preseason games done and dusted, Chelsea does not look like the team that won the league by 8 points last season. Yes, the second half was really good last night. And yes, many academy youngsters playing could be used as an excuse; but further improvements need to be made to beat Swansea City in the late kickoff at home on 8th.
