Season Opener Or An Eye Opener – Player Ratings: Chelsea Vs. Swansea
Finally, English Premier League is back, as we look ahead to the busy and football grasped weekends. Swansea visited London to take on the defending Champions in the season opener for both the teams.
Unfortunately, it was one of those rare occasions when Chelsea dropped points at home. And dropping points in a season opener was a rarer sight for the Chelsea fans.
Let’s take a look at the player ratings.
Thibaut Courtois – Rating: 4.5/10
Perhaps his poorest performance in a Chelsea shirt, as he was sent off in the 52nd minute after a rash challenge in the box on Bafetimbi Gomis. Although it was a controversial decision, the fault was definitely his. His showed his class though, with an amazing save on the buildup to the first Swansea goal.
Branislav Ivanovic – Rating: 5/10
Ivanovic was constantly owned by Jefferson Montero, throughout the game. Serbian’s crosses too, weren’t up to the mark. He was mainly at fault for the first Swansea goal.
Gary Cahill – Ratings: 6/10
Cahill had an average game on Saturday. Though, he could have been tighter to Gomis, as the striker tried and succeeded in many penetrated runs behind Cahill. He made an excellent block in the buildup to the first Swansea goal.
John Terry – Ratings: 6/10
The skipper had a quiet game, slightly below his usual standards. He made a couple of heroic last ditch tackles, but his lack of pace was exposed by a pacey Swansea attack.
Cesar Azpilicueta – Ratings: 6.5/10
Sometimes struggled with the trickery of Andre Ayew, but overall was one of Chelsea’s better players on the day. His attacking output was quieter than normal.
Cesc Fabregas – Ratings: 6/10
He couldn’t impact the game as much as he usually does. Had a good spell of 15 minutes or so. He was subbed off at the hour mark.
Nemanja Matic – Ratings: 6.5/10
Made some good tackles in midfield to protect the back four, but was unable to make his presence felt in the centre as he usually does. He found himself overrun in midfield until, Zouma replaced Fabregas to help him out.
Willian – Ratings: 6.5/10
Chelsea’s second went down as an own goal, but it was the Brazilian’s fine shot that created it. He was a constant threat down the right flank. His energy was very useful after Chelsea went down to 10.
Oscar – Rating: 8/10
He was the reason of the plenty of fouls against the Blues and produced a number of excellent deliveries from dead-ball situations. Opened the scoring with an excellent free kick and was certainly Chelsea’s best player. He was unlucky to be sacrificed, when Courtois went off.
Eden Hazard – Rating: 7/10
Hazard was a bit silent in the first half, but ran riot with his pace on the left flank. Couldn’t get on the score-sheet, despite a couple of very good shots. The PFA Player of the year looked bright for the home side, especially in the second half.
Diego Costa – Rating: 6.5/10
Despite passing a late fitness test, the striker was very sharp throughout the match. Even though he couldn’t find the breakthrough moment to get a goal, he was a constant thorn to the Swansea defense. His fitness will be a vital factor, if Chelsea want to retain their title this term.
Asmir Begovic – Rating: 7.5/10
Chelsea have found themselves a very good backup in Asmir Begovic. He couldn’t do much in the penalty from Gomis, but was really influential in getting the point from the game. Made a few excellent saves.
Kurt Zouma – Rating: 6.5/10
Came on for Fabregas in the second half, and sat well with Matic, as Swansea pushed for the winner.
Radamel Falcao – Rating: 6/10
Looked sharp, as he came late on, as Chelsea made some attempts to win the game late in the second half.
