Nothing good is happening at Chelsea Football Club!
Sitting at 13th position, 8 points behind Manchester City already, who have just secured the signature of Kevin De Bruyne; Unable to sign a decent Central Defender after failed bids for John Stones and Garay; Paul Pogba; the criticism we are facing left and right; it might just be fair to say that we have reached our lowest!
The weekend loss to Crystal Palace have ignited the question as to what is wrong with players like Eden Hazard, Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas when these were the players who were instrumental for us last season. Complacency? Hangover? Hard to say, but one thing’s for sure, Jose Mourinho ain’t going to sit back and watch his players shoot themselves on the foot!
The boss was fairly critical of Eden Hazard and his performance so far and here’s what he had to say on the matter:
“If you are the best player in the league, I think it should be a good responsibility to have a similar season than in the previous season.
“I don’t want to analyse individual performances. In general terms, it is difficult to have a consistent performance when some of the players are not performing at a good level.
“When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not at an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent in the performance.”
FACT: Hazard has not scored since the end of last season — that’s 765 minutes in all competitions.
Mourinho has avoided singling out players so far. The boss has avoided taking individual names in the public as a show of loyalty, but by saying the best player in the league, the boss obviously means Eden Hazard here.
The Belgian was brilliant for us in the trophy winning last season. His impact in a game was unmatched and Hazard is yet to show that level of performance in the preseason and the 4 Premier League games so far. Fair to say, I strongly disagree with Mourinho when he says that Hazard is better than Ronaldo!
But it’s not Hazard who is the biggest problem. Yes, he has been inconsistent but not as horrible as Branislav Ivanovic or even Fabregas and Matic:
“You have players who have fantastic seasons and fantastic moments and the next season do not have the same. If you ask me. Will I accept this and wait calmly for the performance level to be back? No.
“I have to work, react, analyse and if I feel the players are not in conditions to react and give more, I have to make changes. I have never had a problem with that.”
Substituting Nemanja Matic for Ruben Loftus-Cheek against Palace was, I feel, a warning from Mourinho.
“If you ask me. Will I accept this and wait calmly for the performance level to be back? No.”
I hope not! And I hope that Mourinho drops Ivanovic to the bench for once. Even the opposition manager are aware of our obvious weakness at the Right Back.
Here’s Alan Pardew talking about his tactic after the win at the Bridge:
“We doubled up on Ivanovic in the first half with Sako and Wilf. It worked for us for a little bit. Then Yala Bolasie came on and did the same.”

We have conceded 9 goals in the 4 Premier League games so far and Ivanovic has directly been involved in 7 of them. That’s some stat for a defender!
Next up, we face John Stones and co. at the Goodison Park in a fortnight. If we thought Crystal Palace was tough, an Everton away, who would be highly motivated after keeping hold of John Stones, would be another very, very tough one to deal with!
