Outnumbered But Never Outgunned: Things we Learnt (Chelsea vs Swansea)

Chelsea’s Premier League title defense suffered a bit of a stumble as the Blues were held at the home on the opening day itself.

Swansea City secured their first ever point at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era as the match ended square at 2-2. Let’s take a look at the things we learned from this unlikely result.

Preseason is “fake.”

Many of you might remember Jose Mourinho’s statement on the back of the defeat against New York Red Bulls. The Special One had said that pre-season is fake, and absolutely nothing can be made of the results or the team performances in that period. It seems he once again was right, as Chelsea looked really good in the first half, and, in fact, deserved all three points against a good Swansea side.

Oscar looks good

Oscar has a divisive opinion amongst the Chelsea fans as few feel that there are many better options than him at No. 10. Oscar surely answered those critics in his performance. Fresh off his first summer break in 4 years, Oscar looked brilliant in the 50 odd minutes he played. Jose Mourinho predicted that this might be the breakthrough season for Oscar just like last season was for Hazard. If he continues this form throughout the season, Chelsea might win the league even earlier than they did last season.

Chelsea looks different with Costa

Though Costa had an iffy game yesterday, his was certainly up to the task in bullying and harrying defenders. His frequent bursts of pace in the counter, and his general movement to make space, all made the team a lot stronger. Moreover, he had to be constantly marked as he dropped deep sometimes, dragging defenders out of position and creating space for others to run into.

Chelsea needs to sign a full back as soon as possible

Many Chelsea fans were relieved as Jefferson Montero was substituted in the second half after constantly owning Ivanovic in the right flank. Ivanovic is one of the strongest defenders in the league but, unfortunately, is not blessed with pace. Against Swansea, he was left stumped by Montero’s direct running, and was responsible for almost all the Swansea attacks, and Swansea’s first goal. If Chelsea get a left-back, then Azpilicueta can come in as right back on selected occasions, with Ivanovic operating in the center of the defense.

The Premier League will be harder to defend, and not only due to one reason

As Champions, all the teams will be even more motivated to defeat us. Our rivals have improved their squad considerably, spending ridiculous amounts of money in that process. Adding to that, If Chelsea continue to get decisions from the referees like the one yesterday, defending the league will be very difficult.
