It’s official! Oriol Romeu has signed a three-year contract with Southampton for a deal worth to be around 5 Million Pounds.
Remarkably, it’s roughly the same amount Blues coughed up to price him away from the Catalans back in 2011. As per reports published in SkySports:
“Southampton have signed Oriol Romeu on a three year deal from Chelsea.
The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has arrived at St Mary’s in a deal thought to be around £5m.”
Romeu did have a good patch in 2011 under AVB before suffering a knee ligament injury that derailed his career. The next two seasons, he went out on loan to Valencia and Stuttgart, but that hardly helped him in making a comeback to our senior side.
The Spaniard, meanwhile, seemed happy with this transfer as he welcomed the stability after spending much of his time on loan:
“It’s very good to be a part of this club.
“I was looking for a good club and for something new in my career. After spending two years on loan, I needed something permanent and a club with a future – and I think I chose the right one.
“Southampton are doing the right things in the last few years and, once they came to me and asked me to come here, from the first day I was hoping to come.
“Now I just want to keep going and to keep developing as a player, and I’m looking forward to start playing as soon as possible.”
With the arrival of Matic and Fabregas and the rise of RLC, Pasalic and MVG, Romeu was alway going to find it difficult to break into our side however, he could have been a decent depth option at DM and maybe at CB! But alas! That didn’t happen!
Anyways, we wish him all the best at St. Mary’s and hopefully he can resurrect his career that guaranteed so much potential 3 years ago!
