With Chelsea suddenly stepping up in the transfer window and highjacking Pedro right from under Louis Van Gaal’s rather flat nose, bookmakers have made Chelsea odds-on favourites to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus. Whether this is just a rumour started by bookmakers, or it is a concrete news, it is for time to tell. But one thing is definite, Chelsea do need an industrious midfielder.
One could easily see during both matches against Swansea City and Manchester City, that an out of form Fabregas means Chelsea lack sharpness not only in the attack, they also let in goals. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher somewhat rightly pointed out after the drubbing at City that Fabregas couldn’t defend, which led to Silva running rings around the Chelsea midfield and defence.
Ramires is always called upon to partner Matic in midfield whenever Fabregas is played behind the striker or when he is unavailable. And again, it is quite easy to notice that Ramires is not good enough in that role, especially in the bigger games. So there remains absolutely no doubt that Chelsea do need a better player in that position.
While, all this talk about Pogba is in all probability just engendered from the excitement of signing Pedro, the fact remains that Juventus are seriously interested in Cuadrado, a player whose future at Stamford Bridge looks even darker after Pedro’s arrival. The Colombian never really settled at the Bridge to start with, and it may just be possible that a cash plus player deal may initiate some kind of deal for Pogba.
Another midfielder who claimed to be open to a move to the Premier League is PSG’s Marco Verratti. The talented 22-year-old is a hard working midfielder adept at both attacking and defending.
The box to box midfielder, who has alerted the likes of United and Arsenal with his claim, would not only be a nice addition to the Chelsea line-up but would be several times better than Ramires. Also, with the presence of such a fine talent, Fabregas would spur himself on to improve instead of taking his spot for granted.
With Jose Mourinho willing to offload Cuadrado and possibly even Ramires, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea land Pogba or someone else, but we can expect Chelsea to still buy a player or two before the transfer window closes on the 1st of September. And let us hope we get the players we aim for since immense improvement is needed to challenge for trophies.
