MUST READ – A German Journalist Helps Us Analyse Baba Rahman’s Strength

It’s not surprising how little we know about Baba Rahman considering, the Ghanaian was at Augsburg for just one season.

Sure, we can pull off his stats and numbers to make out the kind of player he is. but that wouldn’t be sufficient because the numbers never tell the full story. If we went by numbers, Juan Mata would still be a Chelsea player!

That’s why our official Chelsea website conducted an interview with Archie Rhind-Tutt, a German football expert, and a journalist. Archie was more than happy to oblige as he explained the qualities of Baba Rahman and why he would be a great addition to our squad:

“Baba developed exceedingly well at Augsburg. He was only there for a season, but he contributed quite a bit to what was the greatest season in their history last year.

“Augsburg finished fifth in the Bundesliga which was one of the biggest shocks in recent times in the division.

“He’s exceedingly quick. I saw him live at Borussia Monchengladbach on the last day of the season and what really strikes you when you watch him live is just how athletic he is. What is expected from the modern full-back is somebody who can get back and forward so very rapidly, and he has the quality to do that. Not only that, on the ball he’s just so confident as well and I think he’ll be a real asset to Chelsea.”

Well, that’s great to hear! With Ivanovic terribly out of form, we need Azpilicueta to slot in the Right Back which means Baba Rahman gets a shot at the Left Back. As Premier League is more physical than Bundesliga, the 21-year-old will need to hold his own on the wings and hopefully, link up well with Hazard too!

By the way, Baba Rahman is also quite versatile. A few days ago he said in an interview that he could also play on the wings, and now Archie talks about his ability to play in midfield too:

“He has faced numerous quick strikers and wingers in the Bundesliga and dealt with them accordingly. He can play in midfield, but he’s best suited to playing at full-back. He certainly has the pace to move up the pitch.

We already have a plethora of midfielders so Baba will probably stick to his fullback role unless Mourinho Mourinho’s in a Mourinho-esque way!

Lastly a word on his strength; which is his crossing! Now, I haven’t seen him play with Augsburg, but in the youtube videos, you can clearly see that he is a very good crosser, kind of like Filipe Luis going forward, just faster:

“I can remember last season he was curling dangerous crosses into the box.

“Considering Chelsea have Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa, two players so dangerous with their aerial ability, I think it only bodes well.

“He’ll give Chelsea an added dimension with the extra running. He’ll be willing to bide his time. Being 21 there is potential for him to grow further.”

An attacking Left Back? Are we talking about Ashley Cole here?

Seriously, though, we have missed an all round Left Back since the departure of Cole. Ryan Bertrand was never given enough chances, Filipe Luis was brilliant in attack but vulnerable at defense while, Cesar Azpilicueta is a solid defender who provides little to nothing going forward!

That’s why a lot of hopes rest on Baba Rahman and hopefully, he can grab the opportunity with both hands and makes the position his own for the next decade or so.

Also thanks to Archie Rhind-Tutt for taking out some time to help us in analysing Baba Rahman!
