Mourinho Discusses Oscar And Fabregas’ Position In The Side
Oscar has been one of our best players in the first half of our last couple of seasons. Yes, the second half has been disappointing as the Brazilian has struggled for consistency and he should be criticised for it but when he is in form, there aren’t many No. 10’s not named Lionel Messi, that could challenge him for his place!
Now, as we know, Oscar is our primary No.10, but there have been instances in the past couple of seasons when Fabregas and Willian have occupied that position in the absence of Oscar. Willian has even done pretty well, given that his pressing is just as good as Oscar, but he isn’t as prolific in front of the goal as the former.
While, lots of fans have been demanding Fabregas to start at the CAM, the truth is, Fabregas’ primary position is of a Central Midfielder and Mourinho reiterates the same here:
“Oscar is the only number 10. Willian can play there. Fabregas can play there. Even Eden Hazard can play there.
“But Fabregas is not a pure number 10. He will play many matches for sure, but he is a midfield player more than a player to play behind the striker.”

I completely agree with Mourinho here.
In the system we play, our CAM is expected to press relentlessly, help in defense while scoring and assisting goals all this time. Oscar fits that bill, Willian and Fabregas not so much. The Spaniard has been brilliant in his Central Midfield role and that’s where he truly belongs. As for Oscar, we hope this is the season he has the evolution that Mourinho has been talking about! That would surely help us retain our title, wouldn’t it?
