Eden Hazard is arguably one of the 5 best footballers on the planet. Well, he is definitely the best in the Premier League; that’s for sure.
The Belgian plays at the level where he is capable of defining the outcome of a game by a stroke of genius. Under Jose Mourinho, the 24-year-old has progressed from a very good but inconsistent performer to a consistent, World-Class talent who has the ability to terrorize the best of the defenders, almost regularly.
Yes, almost! That’s the word that separates him from the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. Hopefully, he reaches that level someday but right now, let’s hear what Manchester City and the Belgium national team Captain, Vincent Kompany has to say on his countryman’s ability, before the big game:
“You’d almost hope that Eden Hazard would have diarrhoea.
“Now let’s be serious. You can’t underestimate the impact he has on Chelsea. And then you’ll expect he would have a dip in his performance level.
“Last week against Swansea, he maybe didn’t play his best first half, but when they were reduced to ten, he was the only one who was dangerous. Because he ran past three-four defenders.
“You can have as many tactical plans as you want if Eden starts running, it is chaos. He’s at a level where he decides how good his team are.
“[Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo are stats animals. If you look at their talent, you can compare Eden to them. But they score a lot. Unbelievable.”
The same way we almost hope that Yaya Toure would have diarrhoea on Sunday!
But seriously, you have got to agree with everything that Kompany said above. Against Swansea, Hazard turned up in the second half and led our attack impressively with just 10 men. The level he is at, he surely decides how good Chelsea is, more often than not!
When quizzed whether Hazard could match the crazy stats of Messi and Ronaldo, Kompany replied:
“Could I say he will never reach their scoring levels? I would never bet on that.
“Eden has made so much progression that last few years that it is possible he reaches their level. It wouldn’t even be a bad performance when he ends up just behind Messi and Ronaldo.”
Well, that is a question which gets thrown around a lot. Will Hazard reach that level? Is he better than Ronaldo/Messi? Frankly, I don’t care. There’s no way Hazard is scoring 40 goals a season in Premier League. In fact, not even Messi or Ronaldo could do that.
The physicality, the competition, the intensity of the Premier League is too much to perform on that kind of level. So, that isn’t a fair comparison anyway. But I would say, Hazard is still way behind Messi or Ronaldo in the consistency department. Hopefully, he would get there in a year or two.
Lastly, a word on the title race:
“I didn’t like the way we ended our last season and I like a challenge. That was for me a sign: I want to prove that I still can do it.
“Chelsea became champions last season, so they’re still the best team. It’s a nice challenge for us. Last season we were the better team twice [against them], but in the end we failed and they got away with the better result.
“If we play a dominant game again, it will be fantastic, but the three points are more important.”

Seems like Kompany and co. are realizing the importance of result over a dominant performance!
This is, no doubt, going to be a cracker of a contest with a potential to have an early impact on the season. Hopefully, we come out, with at least a point to show for, given the instability and controversy surrounding us!
