And so the saga finally comes to an end!
Although, it isn’t an end that the Chelsea fans expected or hoped for, as we have failed to secure the signing of the Englishman!
According to reports published in the Express:
“EVERTON have rejected Chelsea’s £37 million bid for defender John Stones.
And the Stamford Bridge club are now ready to walk away and admit defeat in their chase for the England international after a fourth bid, a British record fee for a defensive player, had been turned down.”
The Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright released the following statement on Stones’ situation, putting hold on any rumors linking him to Chelsea:
“Everton have rejected a transfer request from John Stones.
“Since the start of the window, we have resolutely turned down offers from another Premier League club for our player.
“John is not for sale and he will remain a highly-valued member of our first-team squad.”
The Everton management and Roberto Martinez had insisted from the start that they are not looking to sell their young superstar to Chelsea with Martinez suggesting that he sees Stones as a future England Captain:
“We’ve got great ambition and desire, and great plans for John. In life and in football, sometimes money cannot buy everything.”
Oh well! Our defensive frailties meant that John Stones could have started for the Blues straight away. Although, there’s still 4 more days for the transfer window to end, it might be fair to say that the 21-year-old English defender will remain with the Merseyside club for this season at least!
With City completing the transfer of Nicolas Otamendi for a record 32 Million Pounds, we definitely need another Centre Back to challenge for the titles this season. If it ain’t John Stones, maybe we should take a look at Ezequiel Garay or God forbid, Raphael Varane?
