Chelsea vs West Brom – Player Ratings
The Blues have finally managed to secure three points in the third week of the season, amidst in a difficult manner. After going 3-1 up at the halftime, the fans hoped for a comfortable victory, maybe even a goal fest from the Blues, but we barely managed to hold on to our lead at the end of 90 minutes.
Let’s take a look at the player ratings now to find out who came out on top:
THIBAUT COURTOIS – 7/10
The Belgian announced his comeback by saving a penalty from Morrison. As always, Courtois looked comfortable at the back, but he could have done better by leaving his line to help Terry when the Englishman was one on one with Rondon. Still, a solid performance!
CESAR AZPILICUETA – 8/10
The best of our back four, the Spaniard played well and even scored his first Premier League goal. Although, there were a couple of instances in the first half when he struggled against the winger, but overall had a really good game!
KURT ZOUMA – 7/10
Had a solid second half, struggled a bit with his positioning in the first half. The Frenchman has got the speed to make up for his blunders, but he still has to learn a lot on his positioning and tackles.
JOHN TERRY – 5/10
Was that a red card? Doesn’t matter! He was sent off which left us with 10 men for the last 40 minutes. Is this the beginning of an end of such an illustrious career?
BRANISLAV IVANOVIC – 4/10
Directly responsible for the second goal as he couldn’t hold off Morrison in the penalty area. Please drop him, maybe Jose?
CESC FABREGAS – 6.5/10
I would give him 8 for his contribution upfront but 4 for his defensive duties so, a 6 sounds about right? As always was very good with his passing. Be it the scoop to Costa which resulted in an Azpi goal or that beautiful ball to Willian which resulted in the Costa goal, he was great. Defensively, though, he struggled a bit.
NEMANJA MATIC – 5/10
It didn’t help Fabregas either that the usually brilliant Matic was gifting away penalties and collecting yellows for silly challenges. Looks like it’s a Serbian thing. First Ivanovic and now Matic!
WILLIAN – 6/10
Had a Willian-esque game. Worked hard, pressed relentlessly, covered lots of ground, but when it came to putting the ball in the back of the net, he fluffed up a very easy chance!
PEDRO – 9/10
Couldn’t have asked for more! Man Of The Match on his debut, Pedro ran the show alongside Eden Hazard in the first half. Scored and assisted one each and could have had more if it wasn’t for some missed chances.
EDEN HAZARD – 7.5/10
If Willian had performed the way Eden Hazard performed yesterday, I would have given him a 9. But, we all know how good the Belgian can be, don’t we? The winger is slowly coming back to his best and with Pedro alongside him, it should take some pressure of his shoulders!
DIEGO COSTA – 7.5/10
Wasn’t at his best, but finally got on the scoresheet. The 100 yards run he made to score that goal was brilliant. Tthe Spaniard also combined brilliantly with Pedro and Hazard and had a very good first half! Although, he did miss a couple of chances, that’s why a 7!
GARY CAHILL – 7/10
Came on for John Terry and had a very good game. The Englishman had to wear a mask because of the broken nose but partnered well with Zouma to hold on to the lead at the end!
RADAMEL FALCAO – 6/10
Came on for Costa for the last 15 minutes. Had a good chance to get on the scoresheet but fluffed it up. Apart from that, was good in his hold up play and with his movements in the box.
JOHN OBI MIKEL – 8/10
I don’t necessarily hand out 8 points for someone who comes on for the final 10 minutes, but the arrival of the Nigerian meant we calmed down in the middle while we shut down the shop. Mikel was very good in his little cameo as we managed to hold off our lead and grab the three points!
