As we are already aware, Marco Van Ginkel has landed a one-year loan deal with Stoke City with Asmir Begovic probably heading to the Bridge in the next few days.
The Dutch midfielder has been something of a disappointment so far for the Blues. There’s no doubt about Van Ginkel’s potential, but his consistent injury problems have let him down when it mattered the most. Although, Marco was exceptional for AC Milan in the business end of last season, but if the midfielder wants to establish himself in the Chelsea first team, this is the opportunity he needs to grab by both hands.
Stoke City are traditionally famous for their physical game, but with the arrival of Mark Hughes, they have started playing some actual football. With Steven N’Zonzi leaving a big void in the Potter’s midfield, it’s the perfect opportunity for the Dutch star to establish himself as a regular for Mark Hughes. Marco Van Ginkel seems to be relishing this opportunity and had the following to say after completing his loan deal:
“Of course I want to be fit and playing games. I’ve come to Stoke to be a good part of the team, I want to be important for the team. After two games with Chelsea I’ve had a lot of injuries so I couldn’t play a lot of games. This year I hope I can play a lot, get used to the Premier League. I’m very excited about it. I had a conversation with the manager and that was good. If you come to a club it’s always important to speak to the manager to see what he’s thinking about you and your place in the team. In the end I got a very good feeling to come to Stoke. It’s good to meet all the boys today and I’m looking forward to my first week of training.
Van Ginkel seems to say all the right things which proves he certainly has got a good head above his shoulders. Now, only if he can remain fit for the whole season!
I didn’t know Steven Nzonzi very well but I saw some games and he did very well. I’m like a box to box player. I can be an important player in front but also defensive wise. That’s what I want to bring to the team. I will work hard for the team and hopefully be important with goals and assists.”

Van Ginkel identifies himself as a box to box player who can score and assist important goals. If he can only justify his potential on the pitch, we might just have another Lampard at our disposal!
