MUST READ INTERVIEW – Branislav Ivanovic Talks About The Vice-Captaincy, Pre-Season and Falcao

John Terry is our Captain fantastic and everyone knows that.

But, the Englishman is at the twilight of his career and soon enough, he probably won’t be starting every Premier League game like he’s used to.

We will need someone else to lead our team during his absence, someone who’s a fierce and experienced leader and has the respect of his team-mates. Someone who is ready to give everything for the club, someone who deserves to wear the armband. After the departure of Petr Cech, the only names who comes to mind with all those qualities is Branislav Ivanovic!

The Serbian is a trusted soldier in Mourinho’s army, one of the untouchables, you can say! A fierce Right-Back who isn’t afraid to get physical and always gives his all to the team, he is exactly what Mourinho desires in his players.

On the right side of thirty, Ivanovic still has few years of top level football left him and maybe that’s why he is honoured with the vice-captaincy. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, the Serbian showed his delight on the new role:

“I am really so happy

“I am very proud of that, to be the vice-captain of this team. This is something extra for me, more responsibility, and I will try to do it well for the team.

“I am doing what I was doing before, trying to do my best. I will try to do that in the future as well but basically not a lot of things change. John Terry is the real captain and leader.”

He seems to be a humble guy off the pitch compared to the fierce character he is on the pitch. Ivanovic has captained his national side for the past three years and when quizzed if that experience is gonna help him mould into this new role at Chelsea, the Serbian replied:

“Of course, this helps me a lot because I am used to being that part of the team, and it is great. Anybody is proud to be the captain of their country and I hope we will have a good year.”

Speaking about the pre-season so far and the reason for our dismal show against New York Red Bulls:

“The first week of this pre-season was very physically hard and very important for all of us.

“We have done a great job in training. Maybe the first game we didn’t play well because we were a little bit tired, but with the freshness will come more. The pre-season is very good for us.

“The first couple of games physically are very difficult but it has to be hard to get you back to normal.

“For our position, it is important to play 90 minutes to have hard games. This makes you fit for the season and for us of course there will be a lot of running in the season, but this is our part in the team.”

I am sure we will get better with each passing game as we get ready for the community shield against Arsenal! Ivanovic also spoke about the new signings, Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao and had a few kind words for the duo:

“I wish him (Asmir Begovic) good career in Chelsea and during all the years he was in Stoke he was one of the best in the league, and I hope he can help our team, he says, before confirming he is happy to now have Falcao as a team-mate rather than having to defend against the Colombian.

“Especially when we remember how he good he was when he played against us. He is scoring goals in training and is working hard to be at that level.

“The new guys are always happy when they arrive at Chelsea. They adapt very quickly and all of the guys help the new ones with this. It shows how good the atmosphere is inside our team.”

Lastly, on a personal note, Ivanovic considers his last season as one of the best ever of his career. He was only behind Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard in the assist column and the Serbian will look to continue this trend next season:

“I like it when I am the one behind those guys in the list, and I hope this year will be the same mentally and physically so I am ready to do more.

“Last year was a great year for me, maybe one of the best, and when you do this, you always have to set new targets to break, and go one step better than last year.”

The Serbian had a stellar season last time around. If Ivanovic can better his performance, it will help us a long way in defending our title and maybe even go deeper in the Champions League this time around!
