Chelsea vs Barcelona – Pre-Season Match Preview

The Champions of England move ahead in their preseason and meet their Spanish counterparts, Barcelona, in a friendly which promises to be a tasty affair for fans of both the clubs.

If the rivalry with PSG is just starting, Barcelona and Chelsea is a completely different cup of tea. The teams, the fans and even the players hate each other, and it has been publicly stated by none other than Messi, who said that some players hate Chelsea more than they hate Real Madrid.

Chelsea hasn’t had a great preseason so far. After a poor show against New York Red Bulls, where they lost 4-2, Chelsea were slightly better against PSG, albeit playing the first half poorly. Eventually the Blues scrapped through on penalties, giving them some much-needed confidence before facing a “friendly” of such proportions. After this, Chelsea returns to England to face Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Well, it’s not like Barcelona have had a good preseason to boast of. They won their first game against LA Galaxy 2-1 but played poorly against Manchester United, as the European Champions fell short and lost by 3 goals to 1.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea have a full squad to choose from, as the Copa America stars have returned to the first team and are available. The squad is fully fit, and raring to go. Felipe Luis is still absent, though, as he is completing the formalities for a transfer back to Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona are missing two of their biggest players in Leonel Messi and Neymar, as they are enjoying their summer holidays post the Copa America. The loss of these two players certainly makes this match lose a lot of hypes. Yet, the presence of star-studded players is not a rarity at the Catalan club, with regulars Suarez, Iniesta, Rakitic, Busquets and others expected to start.

Since this is a friendly, we can’t really expect a lot, but you never know with this tie considered almost as seriously as a derby, or a Clasico for that matter. Both managers will look to be a bit conservative, as the season starts in less than a couple of weeks and losing a player would certainly what any one of them would like. Yet, we should expect an entertaining match, perhaps even a dramatic one.
