Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic for £8 million, according to The Guardian. The Bosnia-Herzegovina international will replace Petr Cech as Thibaut Courtois’ understudy, and is sure to keep the Belgian constantly on his toes.
Begovic has been one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League over the course of last 4-5 seasons and has attracted a lot of interest from other big clubs including Manchester United and Liverpool. Having him in the side will give us a lot of security next season, and any sort of layoff for Courtois can be dealt with without pressing the panic button.
As a part of this deal, midfielder Marco Van Ginkel will spend the season on loan at the Britannia Stadium. The Dutchman started brightly under Jose Mourinho after signing in 2013 from Vitesse but has failed to break into the side again after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Capital One Cup tie against Swindon Town.
He was on loan at AC Milan last season, where he was bright spot for the Serie A club during the business end of the season, but playing in a Premier League side will do his experience a lot of good. The Potters are a hard-tackling side and will suit his style perfectly. In football, there is no bigger test in the world than ‘doing it on a cold, rainy Monday night in Stoke’, and van Ginkel’s credibility will surely be put to the utmost test.
He will fill the void vacated by Steven N’Zonzi’s move to La Liga side Sevilla, and judging by how the Frenchman played last season, van Ginkel has a big job on his hands. But this is also a big opportunity to prove to Mourinho that he is the solution to Chelsea’s midfield conundrum, as we look for another central midfielder this summer.
