Chelsea After Barca Castaway: Sky Sports

Chelsea are apparently interested in adding depth to their midfield this summer, and now they’ve found themselves linked to a former Arsenal man.

After spending a successful six seasons at the Emirates, Alexis Song was prized away for £15m by the Catalan Giants three years ago. After two fruitless seasons at the Camp Nou where he barely got his foot on the pitch, he was loaned to West Ham to get his feet sorted and kickstart his career again.

He was influential in the hammer’s push for a top 10 finish during the first half of the season. He was influential in orchestrating his team’s attacks. His passing was as slick as ever. Although his form dwindled during the second half (considering the dismal performances put forward by West Ham). Nevertheless, he has certainly earned his lost reputation back and according to Sky Sports he has enticed a lot of interest from top Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City.

West Ham do have an option of signing him permanently, but Barcelona has the power to veto the deal and sell him to the highest bidder. Even a £5m transfer would be considered as a profit by the Catalan Board.

The 27-year old is a robust box to box midfielder, who likes to in front of the last line of defence, orchestrating play from the deep. He has very incisive passing skills and is very good on the ball. He is heavily relied upon to destroy the opponent’s attacks and is renowned for his ability to launch quick counter attacks.

Chelsea and Manchester City seem to be lacking sufficient homegrown players for next season and are in the market looking for one. Talented and experienced home grown players seem to be a rare commodity in recent times.

Even though Song represents Cameroon in the international level, he is considered a home grown player, this intensifies the competition to sign him. So it looks like West Ham’s hopes of tying him up permanently look very bleak. Although he would not be able to waltz into a star-studded Chelsea side, he would certainly prove to be a capable backup.
