It was Chelsea who came up top in an entertaining match as they beat a Barcelona team 2-2 (4-2 on penalties).
Granted, Barcelona didn’t have their two key figures Messi and Neymar, but, even Chelsea played a fair few youngsters and weren’t completely sharp. And of course, Messi still hasn’t scored against us!
However, here are a few things we learned in this Pre-season contest:
Hazard is ready for the season
Eden Hazard was by far the best player, not only in Chelsea but also throughout the Premier League. Last week, even Jose Mourinho said that Hazard was better than Ronaldo of last season. His words were proved correct by Hazard as he scored a scintillating goal against the European Champions, dancing past 4 defenders before coolly slotting the ball home in the bottom left corner. With the Community Shield against the Gunners around the corner, this goal was evidence that he is ready and already waiting for the season to kick start.
Kennedy is someone to look out for
The 19-year-old Brazilian International, currently on trial at Chelsea, showed that he is capable of good things, as he was the constant thorn in the Barcelona side in the first half. His touches looked calm and good, he tracked back effortlessly and wasn’t afraid of making a tackle. While, it is almost certain that Chelsea will finalize this transfer soon, and he’ll be spending the season on loan due to work permit issues, but we might be seeing a new star of the future in the making.
Falcao is improving
Many Chelsea fans were more than skeptical about Falcao’s loan move to Chelsea. Some people also compared this move to Torres’ time at Chelsea, but his past two performances are certainly starting to cast doubt into the people critical of him. Granted, he hasn’t scored for Chelsea yet (not counting the 2 penalties!) but his confidence is certainly improving. His movement looks sharp, and he even tried that overhead kick in the 78th minute, which shows that maybe, just maybe there is a small possibility that the beast is slowly awakening within him.
Diego Costa might have to be wrapped up in cotton wool again.
However precautionary it may seem, but the fact remains that Costa had to be taken off due to problems in his hamstring. Mourinho later said that he might feature in the Community Shield, but even an off summer doesn’t look to have helped Costa’s hamstrings. As a result, we might have to take the safer route and rest Costa regularly, yet again!
Chelsea can make a deep run in Europe
Last season was a very bad year for Chelsea, as far as Champions League was concerned. Losing out in the Round of 16 stages is certainly considered a failure, but beating a team of the caliber of Barcelona, the European Champions is surely a reminder that we are a Champions League title contender. With the added advantage of having a manager like Jose Mourinho in our side, we can stay assured that surely, we can win the Cup with the big ears even this season, or the next.
