Arsenal beat last year’s defending Champions Manchester City in the Community Shield and yet managed to languish at third in the league despite an almost fantastic end to their season.
Chelsea last met Arsenal in the community shield in 2005 when Drogba and Fabregas scored for their respective clubs of the time. It’s all changed now and that’s the upcoming Community Shield in a nutshell.
It can bode well or not. It may or may not be a preseason game, but it is Arsenal v Chelsea, two clubs aspiring for this season’s league title. Much more importantly, it is a Mourinho vs Wenger for the fourteenth time. The score remains 13-0 to the Special One. Traditional underachievers Arsenal come into this game with the hope of a consecutive Community Shield victory.
As for team news, Chelsea are almost full strength. Doubts linger over the possibility of Costa and Cahill missing the Community Shield against the gunners, but nothing is for certain as of yet. Arsenal will be Without Welbeck, Sanchez and Ospina. Cech would face Chelsea for the first time in full gunners colours. Not a good start, but we have Cesc now.
Arsenal have not lost a single match of their preseason just as Manchester United had last season if that means anything. Chelsea have not won a game in normal time and were drubbed by New York Red Bulls for being too rusty. However, fitness levels will definitely be better by Sunday.
Like any Chelsea vs Arsenal game, this will be a contest in every aspect of the game. Let’s just hope Wenger doesn’t go for a real bout with Mourinho this time around. So, on we move to the three key player battles we expect to see in the game.
Hector Bellerin vs Eden Hazard:
The last time Arsenal played Chelsea in April, they somehow managed to keep the PFA Player of the season in control. The 20-year old gunner’s defender has penned a new deal and looks set to replace Debuchy as the first choice for the north London club and a good performance against the Blues won’t go amiss. His pace gives him considerable prowess in order to control the best attacking player in the league.
While Bellerin may be one for the future and be looking at cementing a place in the squad, Hazard is more than capable of overcoming the hurdle presented to him. If the goal against Barcelona is any indication, Bellerin will have a long evening.
Bellerin: Dribbling, Pace
Hazard: Bellerin+Crossing, Shooting and the Rabona.
Francis Coquelin vs Cesc Fabregas:
What happens when a current gunners defensive midfielder meets an ex-creative midfielder in a Chelsea shirt? Cesc Fabregas makes a fool out of him for 90 minutes! Last season’s top assist maker comes up against Gunner’s holding midfielder who is not so good at holding the ball. However his interceptions and vital tackles will need to be dealt with by the Spaniard assist King.
Coquelin: Tackling, Aerial Ability
Fabregas: Best Arsenal Player to not have won the league (with them)!
Mesut Ozil vs El Capitano:
Nobody knows for sure how exactly will Mesut Ozil play the game. He can be himself or his shadow, the latter preferred in most cases. Arsenal needs to teach him a lesson about consistency instead of Hazard. He comes up against the best defender in all of England. His chemistry with Walcott, Ramsey and Giroud can be mesmerising when it comes off. The Captain will need to be at his best to cope with the creative quartet of Wenger:
“It smells like we can score goals. That is something that is very positive. Around the box our passing looks incisive, dangerous, creative.”
Ozil: Invisibility, Passing
Terry: Rock like commitment, tackling and better goalscoring abilities than Ozil
Chelsea may win or lose, and Mourinho might not have bothered much about the result if it wasn’t Arsene Wenger in the opposition dug out! Expect a typical Arsenal Chelsea game, with the Blues yet to find Arse6-nil form.
