After the spectacular season we’ve just had, it would be difficult to say exactly who we need to sign for the transfer window to be deemed a success. A central midfielder is certainly needed, along with a creative attacking midfielder and a centre forward.
The last of those departments has been taken care of, with the club confirming the arrival of Radamel Falcao on a one-year loan deal. The Colombian, even with his torrid form of late, will certainly be a great player to have in our ranks next season. Also, if Jose Mourinho can inspire him to get off to a flying start, it won’t take long for him to rediscover the form that had made him one of the most feared strikers in Europe 2-3 seasons ago.
When it comes to the three players behind the striker, we certainly need some reinforcements. I haven’t been shy of voicing my criticisms of Oscar and Willian in the past. There is no doubt that we will need them to contribute a lot more in terms of goals and assists to have a good chance of retaining the Premier League.
There are lots of rumours going around that Juan Cuadrado could be sold just six months after his arrival from Fiorentina. Spanish daily Super Deportes suggests that Jose Mourinho has sought help from Jorge Mendes to help negotiate a transfer away from Stamford Bridge. Say what you will but the Colombian winger has just not settled into the Premier League. It makes a lot of sense to recover most of the amount we spent on him by selling him now, rather than running the risk of his market value falling even further. It may be too early to say, but if that’s what Mourinho makes of it, I’ll go with him.
Mohamed Salah’s agent has also confirmed that he will remain in the Serie A next season, even though he will not extend his loan deal at Fiorentina. The likes of Juventus and Inter Milan have been said to be interested, but it remains to be seen whether we sell him or loan him out again.
This means that we need to sign at least one player in the Attacking Midfield position. Two players who have strongly been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer have been Arda Turan and Antoine Griezmann. Chelsea has consistently been linked to Griezmann, but the talks of a move for him have died down recently. Instead, it has been revealed that Arda Turan wants a move to Chelsea, snubbing Manchester United and Barcelona in the process.
So, whom should we go after?
It’s a very simple choice in my opinion. If you compare the statistics of the two players, there is only one winner. Griezmann has by far the better record, scoring 25 goals in all competitions last season to Turan’s measly return of 6. Yes, the Frenchman did play as a second striker, but his impact was far greater than that of the Turk.
Turan is a player that Mourinho would like a lot in the sense that he is a tireless runner who works hard for the team’s cause. But, we already have that in Willian and Oscar. The 28-year-old’s release clause is around the £30-million mark, and spending that kind of money to land another hard-working winger who doesn’t contribute enough goals is hardly a great idea.
Griezmann, on the other hand, will be costlier to sign, as his release clause is just over £43 million. But, along with the Frenchman comes the guarantee of goals and assists. The 24-year-old is also extremely versatile, and can play equally adeptly as an out-and-out forward when required. He can also function in each of the three positions behind the striker.
Therefore, according to me, Griezmann suits our current needs much better than Turan. Seeing that we do need to bring in a quality player in that department, it would be much smarter to bring in someone with a proven track-record of direct contributions.
After all, we can’t expect Eden Hazard and Diego Costa to come up with the goods every time, can we?
