It is being said that Chelsea have been quite cold in the transfer market this summer and quite rightly so. There has been no ‘big’ signing up till now however, there has been one which got several heads rolling, the one we beat our rivals Manchester City to – the signing of the 19-year old Brazilian prodigy Nathan, who is billed to be the next big thing in South American football.
The dazzling midfielder arrived from Atletico Paranaense on 1st July for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £4.5m and was loaned to the Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem on the 10th.
Even though the Brazilian came to the Premier League champions with a flamboyant reputation, there was no way he was going to make it to Jose’s Mourinho’s side at his current level. The playmaker, though immensely talented, is still a work in progress.
For those of you who are still perplexed and are wondering who is this Brazilian wonder kid, don’t sweat it folks, we got it covered for you. We did a full analytical scan of the boy from Blumenau to get you all the answers.
WHO IS ‘NATHAN.’
Nathan Allan de Souza, better known simply as Nathan, first burst onto the scene during the U17 World Cup 2013 where he scored five goals in five games and was named in the team of the tournament. His destructive partnership with Mosquito (Thiago Rodrigues da Silva) upfront earned them comparisons with the fabled Brazilian pairing of Bebeto-Romario.
He added to the Samba flavour at Stamford Bridge by becoming the 7th Brazilian on Chelsea’s books alongside Filipe Luis, Ramires, Oscar, Willian, Wallace and Lucas Piazon when he put pen to paper and became a blue on 1st July. Upon joining he remarked:
“I am very happy to be joining Chelsea, the champions of England, and I hope I will be able to learn a lot and develop my game.”

STYLE OF PLAY
Nathan is your typical Brazilian number 10 playmaker, which can be used as an attacking midfielder, second striker and on the flanks, where he excels at providing assists to fellow attackers. With his dribbling ability, impressive pace and agility he makes lightning-fast runs through the opposition’s defences and is known for pinged long balls to the forward line. He possesses a promising knack of scoring goals.
WHAT CAN HE OFFER
Nathan, who is regarded as the finest footballing prospect from Brazil, has all the potential to do great things in future. His highlight reel for both club and the Brazilian youth teams are a testament to that.
However there are certain things which raise doubts as well, for instance the stylish playmaker had never played full 90 minutes for his previous club Atletico Paranaense and was involved in a dispute with them which finally got resolved when Chelsea came knocking.
According to South American football reporter Tom Vickery, Nathan performed well as an under-17 international but his performances at under-20 were below standard. He concluded that:
“it’s difficult to see what he has done in the last season to justify interest from Chelsea.”
Despite all the hearsay, there is no doubt that Nathan is a raw talent with immense potential and with the right guidance and effort, can prove to be a valuable asset for the Pensioners in the future. The loan move to Vitesse is definitely a step in the right direction and should help the youngster hone his skills. Besides, when the special one is gunning for a player, you know he’s something special.
