Chelsea are planning to have a quiet transfer season, and it seems they are planning to increase their bench strength rather than purchasing major first team players. With Asmir Begovic becoming the second major signing after Radamel Falcao, Chelsea are looking to sign Pedro and offload January debacle, Juan Cuadrado. Also, a centre back that may be a standby to the English duo of John Terry and Gary Cahill is needed at the Stamford Bridge. Today we analyze which player could join the Chelsea squad next season.
Chelsea have an amazing pair at the back in the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill. Also, some amazingly gifted defenders are carving a niche for themselves. Kurt Zouma, Nathan Ake, Andreas Christensen and Tomas Kalas have shown a mature head over there young shoulders but still are in the developing process. So, the only backup seems to Terry and Cahill are Zouma and Ivanovic. Zouma can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder when needed, and Branislav Ivanovic plays as right back primarily.
One more problem that Chelsea might face is John Terry’s age. With Terry reaching the twilight phase of his career, it might be difficult for him to carry forward the form he displayed last season. Terry might have signed a contract extension but an injury might hamper his great run, and it might just be the end of his glorious career. Speaking about Gary Cahill, Cahill has been a bit careless at the back sometimes, and it has costed Chelsea a lot. Also, Cahill spent some time out with an injury last season, and his form suffered on his return post injury. He was further benched, and Zouma was made to play alongside John Terry. We now look at the possible backup options Chelsea could sign.
Umtiti has been impressive for Olympique Lyon and has attracted a lot of attention from major European sides. He was rumored to sign for Chelsea but, unfortunately, his deal couldn’t work out, and a contract extension was handed to the Frenchman. He could still be heading to Chelsea and link up with his fellow compatriot Kurt Zouma; however it would cost Chelsea a good 20 million euros as compared to 10 million euros for which he was available earlier.
This one could be an interesting choice I would say. Stones has been impressive at the back for Everton and has played as a centre back primarily but also deployed as a right back to aid Everton full-back Seamus Coleman. He could be a natural replacement for Terry as he is English, strong and clinical at the back. He has definitely proved his worth and shown signs of being an amazing centre back for the future. However, 20 million pounds is the cost that would take to acquire the services of the English defender.
This rumour has been seemingly endless, and it would be the same unless and until Varane joins Chelsea. Mourinho has always been vocal on his liking towards Raphael Varane and always tried to lure him away from Madrid. The French centre-back is strong and one of the hottest young stars on the field. His fiery presence makes him a captain material and shown that he is in the mould of William Gallas and Lillian Thuram. Varane is someone Mourinho is enviously looking at and should sign the French defender ASAP.
