Sunderland Eyeing Up Chelsea Midfielder’s Loan
Sunderland are keen on signing young Chelsea midfielder Marco Van Ginkel on loan. The 22-year-old talented midfielder spent the last season on loan at AC Milan but is apparently keen on returning to the Premier League.
Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat is desperate to strengthen his squad, and Marco Van Ginkel is reportedly high on his priority list this season. Newcastle United is another club that appears to be interested in the midfielder, but Sunderland seems to be in pole position to sign him, according to the Metro.
Chelsea signed Van Ginkel in 2013 from Vitesse Arnhem for a fee of around 8 million pounds. But after having made only two appearances for the Blues, Van Ginkel suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a league cup match against Swindon Town, which ruled him out for seven long months.
Due to the presence of Matic and then the signing of Fabregas last season, it was deemed that Van Ginkel was set for a long spell on the sidelines. A loan deal was thought to be the best option for him, and so in September 2014, Marco Van Ginkel was sent to AC Milan on a season-long loan. His debut for the Serie A giant was one to forget, after suffering an ankle injury at 34 minutes. Following his recovery, Van Ginkel was left on the bench as an unused substitute for almost two months, despite being fit, evoking an angry reaction from his agent Karel Jansen, who said:
“Even after he recovered from the injury he has had very little time on the pitch. We were not happy about it, and it went against all logic. We made it clear that this was not the intention when he joined on loan. Marco did not have to go to Italy and do nothing. Look, if he wasn’t very good, this treatment was understandable but a fit Van Ginkel would walk into the Milan side. Chelsea have not pulled the plug, but they might if the current situation continues”

After having started against Udinese, another two-month spell on the sidelines followed, due to an injury caused by a hard tackle by teammate Sulley Muntari during practice. Van Ginkel finally made his return in January against Lazio, and since April, he played every minute of the Serie A, even scoring the opening goal against Roma in a 2-1 win on May 9th.
Marco Van Ginkel is a real talent in midfield, whose unfortunate injuries have kept him from displaying his full potential after Chelsea signed him. He is a box-to-box midfielder, with an impressive range of passing. Comfortable on both feet, Van Ginkel is full of running, while his ability to play across the midfield, both in an attacking as well as a deeper role, makes him a player of great utility. He has previously been likened to the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard by the Special One himself.
There is no doubt that Van Ginkel is a valuable asset, but his bad luck with injuries has kept him from shining. With Fabregas and Matic currently irreplaceable, and more signings to follow, a loan deal in a Premier League team will do him a world of good. In a perfect world, he gets some valuable game time in the league where he is touted to play in the future. Sunderland seems an ideal club, especially with a fellow Dutchman at the helm of the club. Dick Advocaat has managed in the Eredivisie, and knows all about Van Ginkel, and will surely be able to offer him first team football, as well as use him to his full potential.
