Young French Defender Heading to Chelsea?
Chelsea are going all-guns-blazing this transfer season and are hunting for a defender voraciously with Mourinho highlighting Raphael Varane, Toby Alderweireld, John Stones and Samuel Umtiti as a potential successor to John Terry.
However, each of these players’ saga has hit a dead end as Benitez doesn’t want Varane to leave Madrid, Alderweireld’s loan deal to Southampton from Atletico has kept Chelsea at bay and according to Mirror and Tottenham is eager to sign the Belgian on a permanent basis for the next season.
According to the recent reports in the Independent, John Stones has been reported as a target for Chelsea. However, Everton’s manager Roberto Martinez has set a price tag of around 15 million Euros. Well that’s an exorbitant price for an untested youngster.
So, the only major option left with Mourinho is Samuel Umtiti. And yes we are linked to him already. The French international is currently plying his trade for the Ligue 1 high-flyers Lyon. The Lyonnais defender mainly occupies the centre-half of defence, but can also be deployed as a left fullback and central defensive midfielder.
Samuel Umtiti has two years left in his current contract with Lyon and Chelsea is planning to start the bidding in the region of 10 to 11 million Euros. Umtiti is lurking for a move to Stamford Bridge and team up with his French U-21 compatriot Kurt Zouma at the back. With Alderweireld’s transfer situation going astray, Umtiti seems to be a better available option for Mourinho to snap up.
However, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas wants to keep Umtiti at the club for next season and is planning for a new contract which is sure to increase his buy-out clause. Here is what Aulas said about Umtiti’s potential move:
“Samuel is one of the nontransferable players. We are discussing an extension that will do much to evolve the team.”
“Sam has become a mainstay of the team physically and mentally. He is part of a group of players like Corentin Tolisso and Anthony Lopes that we will extend come what may.”
In conclusion, I think that if Mourinho wants to sign the French bloke, he needs to act quickly and should make a move before a new contract is handed to the French youngster.
