If centre-back was one of the strongest positions for Chelsea in 2014-15, it was because of the fine form of captain John Terry and his partner Gary Cahill. Kurt Zouma has also impressed when called upon, establishing himself as an excellent backup for either of the two Englishmen.
According to report, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, is looking to keep the position consistently strong and has decided to hand over a new five-year contract to the 19-year-old, Andreas Christensen. There were a few reports some months back as well claiming that Chelsea were in talks with Christensen over his new contract. When asked about the matter, the Danish defender’s father and advisor Sten Christensen said,
“It is true that we had a meeting on Tuesday. We are in positive dialogue with Chelsea, but I do not want to say anymore. It is a matter that we’ll consider internally with Chelsea.”
The Denmark international could hardly make his way into the senior team, given the amazing form of Terry, Cahill and Zouma in the heart of Chelsea’s defense. But the 3 appearances he made in the whole of the 2014-15 campaign seem to have done enough for him to earn a new long-term contract.
According to some reports, Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers also showed interest in the 19-year-old as his current contract expires in less than 12 months. However, Jose has decided to make good use of a young and good future prospect, rather than to let him go especially to a direct rival.
The Portuguese tactician believes that one day Christensen will replace skipper John Terry and Gary Cahill, but first it is important for the young defender to gain more experience of playing regular football at the highest level. Once he signs the contract, he will be loaned to the Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach for 2 years. The youngster is expected to gain regular first team experience for a couple of years, after which he may end up in West London again.
Chelsea have had a good relationship with Monchengladbach, mainly due to the permanent transfer of Eden Hazard’s younger brother, Throgan Hazard, who was previously on loan there. The Blues can finally reap the benefits of their good connections with the German club and provide youngsters like Christensen with an excellent opportunity to develop their game.
