What Chelsea Needs To Win The Champions League 2015/16
Chelsea’s last season could be considered as a success from the point of view of any non-supporter. However, the dream of winning the Champions League yet again, is what remains at Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich’s heart.
With The Blues getting knocked out by a 10-man PSG in the Champions League Round of 16, certain gaps need to be plugged if Chelsea were to win the most coveted trophy in Europe. Mourinho is not the one who is shy of spending and he will be highly alert to the areas that need strengthening in Chelsea.
With some departures eminent, Jose must also ensure that Chelsea have depth in the squad that they missed last year. Chelsea, currently need strengthening in three areas:
A classy forward as a back up to effervescent Diego Costa is greatly needed to win Chelsea the Champions League. If we closely take a look at the clubs who have won the Champion’s League in the past 3 seasons (Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and most recently, Barcelona), we can see that each team had at least two top class men ahead to share the goal scoring burden. Munich had the likes of Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben whereas, Madrid had Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema during their successful campaigns. Who can forget the MSN of Barcelona which got them back the glory days at the European stage?!
What Chelsea need is something similar to that. They already have Hazard and Costa in their line up. They need to add one quality forward, either a Centre-Forward or a Winger to their team. Willian is a great utility player. However, he has rarely contributed with goals. Oscar, too, has gone off the boiler. The two Brazilians need to do much more to stake a claim in the starting lineup next year and even the arrival of Salah (back from loan) and the presence of Cuadrado doesn’t give the London based side the cutting edge needed at the bigger stage.
Targets to look at:
To circumvent this problem, Chelsea will need to buy a decent forward who promises them 20 goals a season, at least. With the names like Falcao and Jackson Martinez up for grabs, Chelsea could look at them. Another target they would be monitoring would be Marco Reus. The German has been exceptional for Borussia Dortmund and with Jurgen Klopp having left BVB, Reus would be the perfect piece to fill the jig saw puzzle. His pace and eye for goals and an ability to see a pass makes him a threat and if any team that can afford him, it would be Chelsea.
Age doesn’t look to be a factor for John Terry. At 36, he looks as good as ever. However, that age is shaky and one could soon slip up. With Ivanovic reaching 31 mark and Kurt Zouma the only available back-up centre-back, Chelsea would be looking for one CB in the market.
It would be preferred that their target shall be an experienced one, yet be young. Moreover, he should be good in the air. Although Kurt Zouma is a great talent, using him in the big UCL games is a big risk.
Targets to look at:
One name that fits Chelsea’s bill is Jose Fonte. The Saints’ centre-back has the pedigree to fill the Chelsea back-line and is also a Premier League material. His season with Southampton has been one of the main talking points this season and he is the perfect material for Jose’s team. Another centre-back which Chelsea have always been on the look-out for is Raphael Varane. The Frenchman has been Mourinho’s favorite ever since the Portuguese’s Madrid days and would be a great coup for Mourinho. He will add the pace missing in the the Blues’ back-line and also is a great ball-playing defender. However, to prize him away from Madrid, who themselves look short at the back, Mourinho would have to conjure up a magical spell.
3. Central creative midfield player:
One could argue that Chelsea have a plethora of players to choose from when it comes to the midfield. However, apart from Fabregas, they really lack a player who can cut opposition defenses apart. Moreover, Fabregas offers stability to the midfield which the likes of Oscar and Ramires cannot do. Should Fabregas suffer a spell on the sidelines due to an injury, Chelsea would be heavily exposed in this region. They would need a young CM to back up Fabregas. Chelsea have tried the young Ruben Loftus-Cheek in that position. However, he has not sure enough maturity to come into big Champions League games.
Targets to look at:
Then likes of Ikay Gundogan, Yohann Cabaye and Morgan Schneiderlin are all available this summer and Chelsea would like to get at least one of them. Cabaye looks to be the most feasible option as he would cost less and also would be ready to be a squad player. Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Paul Pogba. However, with the FFP in place, Chelsea would need to sell a lot to afford the bulky Frenchman.
Chelsea have some great players in their squad. A minor tweak and they are ready to challenge for the Europe’s holy grail. Mourinho has done well to plug in the holes and one can be assured that buying these three players will already be on his mind. On the tactical front Chelsea don’t need to do anything much different.
Mourinho has been a master tactician and has got it right more often than not. Chelsea’s loss against PSG was a poor one and one can be hopeful that the Pensioners would be hoping to turn the tide next season.
